Lori J. Durant and her historical and culinary tours in the Palm Beach County area benefit the Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History. On this tour to neighborhoods in West Palm Beach, Palm Beach and Northwood the element of ’emerging art’ was added to the itinerary.

Lori is a great communicator and, between stops on their comfortable mini bus, one learns the history of the settlement and development of Florida from the days of Ponce de Leon … runaway slaves …  Seminole wars … and midwestern industrialists.

This 5-hour+ tour took us to 4 eateries, 1 tea shop and 3 galleries. At each stop, we get to meet the owners or management and learn about the venue or product.  It’s a lotta bang for your buck!

Here’s a peek.

First stop was Dontee’s, a popular family-owned Greek-American diner where we met the mom and three daughters who run the business.taste-culinary-history-tour-1-of-45

They provided a hearty sampling which included spanakopita (spinach pie) and moussaka.


Our next stop was the recently opened 4000 square foot Box Gallery which is a multi-media art gallery and performance space. taste-culinary-history-tour-4-of-45 taste-culinary-history-tour-5-of-45


After that we enjoyed a “tea service” in the Leopard Lounge of the historic and very elaborately styled Chesterfield Hotel on Palm Beach Island. taste-culinary-history-tour-9-of-45

I like a “tea” that starts with bubbly!


There were tea sandwiches, sweets and deliciously warm scones served with clotted cream, jam and a variety of teas.


Another stop was at the attractive Café Sweets Bakery featuring Southern family recipes and a large array of cupcakes and sweets.



The stop at the 3-story Banko Cantina in a historic bank building in the heart of downtown West Palm Beach was a visual explosion as well as one that tickles the palate. taste-culinary-history-tour-22-of-45


Here we were served guacamole, skewers of chicken, shrimp, beef and vegetables …taste-culinary-history-tour-28-of-45

and a churros and ice cream dessert.


After that, we took another art break at Habitat Galleries, a fabulous gallery featuring exquisite glass sculpture pieces.


At Olivia’s Special Teas, where “the craft of brewing meets the art of herbal health”, we tried their Herbal Kombucha.taste-culinary-history-tour-39-of-45


Our last stop was Bohemia AG, a funky ‘art haus and gelateria’ with lots to look at outside as well as inside. They also offer musical and other community events.taste-culinary-history-tour-45-of-45

The customized gelato of unfiltered apple cider sorbetto with Saigon cinnamon and pink peppercorn cream topping we got to taste was a winner!taste-culinary-history-tour-44-of-45

    This is the best tour yet. I want to go to the hotel and cantina for starters. Great post.

    I’m a serial food tourist. It’s the best way to get to know a place. Loved seeing part of this neighbourhood through your eyes and via food.
