Four friends and I enjoyed an evening of food, fun, and frolic with Mama Gizzi and her husband, John, who welcomed us to their tiny and somewhat eccentric pasta shop for a ‘suppah (yes, they’re from MA) club’ experience.

By day, Mama Gizzi makes pasta for a number of restaurants as well as a small selection of prepared takeout meals for locals. Recently they started dinners a few nights a week with an extensive (and cleverly written) menu, some of which is copied verbatim below. Dinner begins with a passing ‘breaking bread’ ceremony.

ON THE TABLE: Mama’s gravy; EVOO dipping oils infused with rosemary & chili and roasted garlic & balsamic glaze; SPINACH RICOTTA DIP: T’aint your average dip. This rich, creamy decadence is topped with toasted walnuts, honey pepper pecans on Mama’s black olive foccacia. Served with Mama’s luvvie chips (baked lasagna sheets with fairy dust…. What? They’re addicting. Move over Lay’s.

The ricotta dip with focaccia crust was my favorite menu item.

Here we are with huge six cheese ravioli lollipops.

APPETIZER: BABY STUFFED ARTICHOKE.  Mama’s off the chain! Marinated baby artichoke, stuffed with ground veal, baby portabella mushrooms with fairy cheese and baked to perfection. Lemon Hollandaise drizzle.

MAIN: CHICKEN ROLLATINI with SCARPARIELLO SAUCE:  Marinated Chicken breasts pounded with roasted red pepper, Italian pepperoni, house made mozzarella and ricotta all snuggled up and rolled then baked! Served with a Scarpariello sauce.  No, not from “The Godfather”. Lemon, rosemary, white wine, hint of butter… so yummy.

SIDE: POTATO/RICOTTA GNOCCHI: Served with a white pecorino romano sauce. One of Mama’s special concoctions.

SIDE: BIG BOWL of MACARONI.  Mama’s special DOP/ SAN MARZANO gravy served with house made fettuccine.

DESSERT: Mama’s DEATH BY CHOCOLATE CAKE. Served with a dollop of John’s homemade black cherry gelato!   Raspberry / chambered drizzle. dessert640Gizzi and John are interesting folks, welcoming hosts, and together they provide a different and fun dinner experience for a very reasonable price.

    I am fascinated with that ricotta dip with focaccia crust. Fascinated. My kind of food. With lots of good wine, good friends, and plenty of time. Very nice.

    This is a must do next time we come over. The dip sounds wonderful and the ravioli is a cute idea.
