Home > Baking > Family Day and Crab Boil Pictorial

Well, a pictorial and a few words of explanation.

“Family Day” means quality time with the ones you love most … enjoying the day, the activities and, of course, eating well. This is how Family Day went down yesterday at Jim and Julie’s.

Everybody (and their dogs!) into the pool.

The golf course view from the pool.

And then it was time for a little happy hour snack and game playing.

We tried Bananagram for the first time and I really enjoyed it, although I didn’t win.

Next it was prepping the boil for these seriously gorgeous blue claw crabs.

Jim made the broth with yuengling beer, a head of garlic, 10 lemons, Zatarain crab boil packets and then added onions, potatoes, corn, chourico sausage and, eventually, snow crabs, shrimp and 16 of these babies.

Meantime, the table was set (and decorated) with brown paper.

My place setting.

My contribution was cornbread that I made with buttermilk, bacon, shredded sharp cheddar, and chopped cilantro in tins that had been greased with cilantro-lime butter …

and a blue cheese broccoli slaw with peanuts and a dressing made from dijon mustard, evoo, cider vinegar, sweet pickle juice, sour cream, salt and celery seeds.

This is what my plate looked like.

I also prepared a light (and small) dessert with ice cream, blueberries, cherries, a sprinkle of granola and a syrup I made by blending pomegranate seeds with their juice, honey and fennel seeds.
We all lead such busy lives these days and don’t often get to spend time relaxing like this. It was WONDERFUL.

And, I came home with leftovers including a container of that delicious broth which is definitely going into a risotto.
