Savor the Avenue • Delray Beach, FL

I had such a wonderful time at this event! And I couldn’t wait to share it with readers. But, days passed. I found I had so much to say that I couldn’t wrap my brain around it. And, because it was such a unique and picturesque experience, I took way too many photos and then I couldn’t decide which ones to post. I also wanted to tell you all about Delray Beach, the town that hosts this event. Oh, yes, and I kept floundering on what to title the post? Florida’s Longest Table? Street Food? Dining with 1000 Neighbors? Oh, hell, why not just go with the name of the event?!

I fear, if I waver any longer, the moment will have passed (at least for me). So, herewith…a really fabulous ‘foodie’ evening. Continue Reading

I ATE • San Francisco • Bites + Sights + Restaurant Reviews

San Francisco is a great city, especially for foodies…they embrace food from every culture, kick it up a notch by inventive combinations and presentations and they’re all so dedicated to local farm-to-table products and the sustainability of our food sources. Very commendable that. And, then, there’s wine country in their backyard. :)

But, I think I may have to issue a ‘smackdown’ with the city because, despite what they say, they don’t have “great” pizza. Don’t get me wrong, it’s very good (really good) but SF doesn’t have a horse in the race with New York and Chicago. And, they definitely need a lesson (from a New Yorker, perhaps a Staten Islander) on how to make a clam pizza.

That said…I gained 5 lbs. in 3-1/2 days! Continue Reading

I ATE • South America

South America has changed. I was happy to find plenty of wonderful roasted vegetables and beautiful fruits and salads in both Argentina and Brazil. This was not the case when I visited South America other times. I think it’s us…food bloggers…continually touting farm-to-table, healthy choices and balanced eating. So, a round of applause to all the foodies out there!

Oh, yes, I had meat too. Infinitely more in 1 week than I generally consume in months! Various cuts of beef, pork, chicken, lamb, ham and chorizo passed these lips. And I had fried appetizers, the occasional dessert and lots of bread. But I also had fresh local fish several times and lots of vegetables and fruit. Sounds like a lot of eating, doesn’t it? Come see… Continue Reading

So FL Foodies, A Primer to Peruvian Food + CVI.CHE 105 • Miami

As you may know,  in my second year of blogging I began to flirt with social media. That led me to twitter and facebook which, in turn, led to Tastecasting — and all that led me to a new circle of friends (real live people :) ) which we affectionately call “So FL Foodies” on facebook.

In less than a year, the group has gotten together multiple times for upscale dinners at places like Scarpetta and Hakkasan in The Fountainbleu Hotel, for a Indonesian tasting dinner at IndoMania, Continue Reading

Taste Gastropub (A Pictorial Restaurant Review)

The term gastropub originally defined a British pub that served food, but they’ve come a long way baby! It’s the latest restaurant craze, popping up all over the place. Remember when everything was a ‘bistro’? Or ‘trattoria’? In New York, for example, there are German, French, Asian, Belgian, Australian, American, Irish and English gastropubs. I’m thinking the new definition should just be “restaurant”. :)

I went to an exceptional one in my area last evening and since you all couldn’t be with me, I wanted to treat you to some of the items on this gastropub menu. We relished every morsel, talked about it all through dinner and way into the evening — and then again over breakfast! Continue Reading

Have You Heard About Tastecasting?

In early September I joined a group called Tastecasting. If you’re a blogger and media-savvy/socially-networked, this group is for you!

The way it works is restaurants invite the local tastecasting team for a ‘complimentary’ tasting…the quid pro quo being team members broadcast comments and photos to the social networks via iphones, blackberries and computers. We generally start before the event broadcasting our invitation and all-around “see you there” messages on twitter and facebook. It’s a hysterical sight when we get together at the dinner…in between bites and gulps, everyone is snapping photos and tweeting courses. Afterwards, we generally write reviews and post photos. I’ve made a new group of friends and we’ve shared some absolutely fabulous food and wine pairing dinners at these events.

Most recently, we were invited to a soft opening of Wild Olives by Todd English in Boca Raton. Continue Reading
