I ATE Puerto Rico, Part 3 • Fajardo + The El San Juan

This is the last in my 3-part series of I ATE Puerto Rico. Fajardo, located in the eastern region of the Island, is a mecca for recreational boating. It’s also the location of the long-established El Conquistador resort. But, for locals and foodies, it’s a great place to take a ride, walk around and stop for some seafood in one of the little outdoor cafes.

While this series focused mainly on roadside food, you should know there is another side to Puerto Rico. Touristy, glamourous, upscale and exciting. I’m going to end with a peek at nightlife at the El San Juan Hotel.

But, first, Fajardo – also known as Las Croabas. 

And since it’s always about food, here’s my lunch of Ensalada de Mariscos con Arañitas (seafood salad, mostly conch, in a basket made of shredded and fried plantain).

A few of us —  obviously content and enjoying the breezy weather.

Fast forward to evening at the El San Juan Hotel. Upscale eating at restaurants like The Palm and Koco’s (creative Caribbean). Pictured here: China Chillo Ceviche (snapper); Warm Octopus Ceviche (background) w/brushed tapenade and Batata Lollipops (sweet potato filled with ginger pork).

The El San Juan Hotel lobby is a sight to behold…lots of glitz and lots of people dancing to live salsa music and drinking at multiple lobby bars. And then there’s the lure of the machines and the roll of the dice in the casino (but no photos allowed – por favor!)

And my personal favorite photo which looks like Olivia Newton John’s “Sandy” from Grease meets Julia Roberts as The Runaway Bride on the dance floor.
