Brighton Beach (Brooklyn)
I lived in NY most of my life and I could count on 2 or 3 fingers (maybe less), the number of times I’ve been to Brighton Beach. But, for some strange reason, when I visited this time, I had an urge to check it out.
So I got a friend to drive me into Brooklyn for lunch on the boardwalk and a stroll around the neighborhood, including a peek into the famous International Market.
Brighton Beach is dubbed “Little Russia by the Sea” or “Little Odessa”. It’s a colorful and cultural seaside escape which is home to, well, lots of Russians who started migrating there in the 1950s. If it weren’t for the overhead el train on Brighton Beach Avenue, you’d swear you left the U.S. [Click on the highlighted text above and you'll be transported to Little Russia.]

The International Market
I first became aware of this market on an episode of “No Reservations” when Tony Bourdain visited it. Two floors of meats, pastries, breads, canned and jarred Russian delicacies, prepared foods, drinks, candies, etc., etc. Here’s a sampling:

I think it was quartered cabbage and beets.
